Lady of the Dunes: Exciting Breakthrough
In April 2022, filmmaker Frank Durant released a documentary covering the infamous case of Massachusetts’ longest unsolved murder, the mystery of the Lady of the Dunes. On Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, Durant reflected on making the film and shared the emotional experience of seeing the recent developments in the case.
Frank Durant, Independent Filmmaker
Born in Attleboro, MA, Frank Durant has been an actor and producer for well over two decades. His passion lies in telling the stories of his native Massachusetts.
In 2016, law enforcement, historians, and journalists approached Durant to ask him to produce a documentary about the murder of the Lady of the Dunes. He agreed and embarked on a two-year research project into the case.
The Lady of the Dunes — A Spirit Lost
In 1974, a woman’s badly mutilated, decomposing body was discovered at Race Point Dunes in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Her hands were removed. Her face was badly crushed. Investigators determined the cause of death to be strangulation but couldn’t tell much more than that. Without a means to identify the victim, the investigation went cold.
The Lady of the Dunes Documentary
After two years of extensive research, Durant started filming. He faced opposition from Cape Cod locals who questioned his intentions. As Durant put it, there was a prevalent view among Provincetown residents that he was exploiting the tragic story for his own financial gain.
However, Durant’s motivation was very different. He described his work as a “true labor of love,” an effort to return a woman’s identity to her and bring closure to her family. He was also motivated by Provincetown Police Chief Meads’ surviving sons, who lived with the case their entire lives — a case that their father obsessed over and took to his grave, still unsolved.
Impact of the Documentary — Freedom in Justice
Released in April 2022, the documentary brought the case back to the national forefront. Seven months later, in November 2022, federal investigators finally identified the Lady of the Dunes as Ruth Marie Terry, a divorced mother with one son whom she had put up for adoption soon after his birth.
Durant noted that law enforcement officers focused on discovering the identity of the deceased woman rather than her killer’s. They believed that this information would be the clue that broke the case.
And they were right.
Several weeks after determining Terry’s identity, investigators also revealed the identity of her murderer — her ex-husband, Guy Rockwell Muldavin, who died in 2002.
Durant also relied on the help of renowned psychic Steven F. Macek, who communed with the spirit of the Lady of the Dunes several times. His meditations revealed that her name began with an “R” and that her killer’s name began with either a “J” or a “G.”
